Beginning with...the Commute

Early that morning, I braved chilly winds, cycling through a picturesque countryside in Netherlands. The route took me past nature reserves and quiet roads, all leading to a small private airport tucked away like a secret less known. Reaching the airport was a mix of adrenaline and calm, as the place seemed almost too peaceful for such a life-changing day.

My flight instructor greeted me warmly, and we headed straight to the hangar. Inside were not just aircraft from our flying club but also planes from neighbouring clubs. At first, I imagined everything here would feel high-tech and intimidating. Surprisingly, everything was simple and approachable, which put me at ease. And then it began.. my first day as a "pilot student" who enthusiastically enrolled in Private Pilot's License program.

Learning the Basics

Before anything else, we headed to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) station.

ATC is the guiding light for all pilots and airplanes.
ATC is the guiding light for all pilots and airplanes.

My instructor walked me through how ATC monitors aircraft conditions, wind patterns, available runways, and other crucial details for the day’s flights. One unexpected task? Paying a nominal takeoff and landing fee—about 15 to 20 euros that day. Yes, even with the thrill of flying, there’s paperwork!

Understanding ATC’s role was eye-opening. They’re the unseen guardians of the skies, ensuring planes avoid midair collisions and responding to emergencies. My respect for this system grew tremendously.

Prepping the Aircraft

Next came down from the ATC, and it was time for the more exciting part. We slowly approached the club's plane and the instructor told me about the Step 1. that happens before every flying session: aircraft inspection.

My instructor methodically showed me how to check everything, from screws and wires to tire pressure and fuel levels. Every inch of the small two-seater Diamond DA20 Katana aircraft had to be reviewed. It was reassuring to know the thorough checks made safety a priority.

Finally, it was time to climb into the cockpit. The seats weren’t exactly luxurious, but who cares when you’re about to fly? As my instructor explained the controls, I felt overwhelmed. Honestly, it seemed like a flood of information. But I kept telling myself, “It’s your first day—just enjoy the experience.”

Taking Off for the First Time

Everything happened so fast. One moment, we were taxiing toward the runway; the next my instructor swiftly followed the take off checklist, pressed a bunch of buttons, the engine roared, and we were airborne.

That split-second feeling—the moment the plane lifted off—was indescribable!

Imagine all your dreams soaring alongside you.

As we reached cruising altitude, I got lost in the view. Farmland, highways, and cities sprawled beneath us. It wasn’t just a flight; it was a new perspective on life.

Mid-Flight Realizations

Flying isn’t all smooth skies. The occasional turbulence jolted me, and my heart raced. I remembered my instructor’s advice—“Just enjoy it”—and focused on the beauty outside. The flight lasted 30 to 40 minutes, but it felt quick as the blink of an eye!

I even got to "feel" the controls through the synced systems. Every move my instructor made on his control stick mirrored on mine, giving me a true sense of control. It was both thrilling and comforting to know he could take over at any moment.

Landing and the Unexpected Surprise

Landing was tricky, at least for me as a beginner. The runway seemed invisible until the last second. Luckily, my instructor handled it like a pro, and we touched down smoothly.

Just when I thought the day was over, two other club members offered me free additional flights. Who says no to a free chance to soar again? I didn’t. My second and third flights were just as exhilarating.

However, flying school isn’t all glamour. To wrap up the day, I had to help clean the aircraft and return it to the hangar. It’s nothing like parking a car—it’s a team effort to ensure the plane is spotless and ready for its next adventure.

Conclusion

My first private pilot lesson was nothing short of magical. From pre-flight inspections to being airborne to a surprise double flight bonus, the experience was packed with excitement and learning. Sure, there were moments of doubt, confusion, and even panic, but that’s all part of the journey.

Flying is about more than just getting from point A to B—it’s about embracing the skies, feeling it, some formal paperworks and of course- finding a sense of freedom. If you’ve ever dreamt of flying, don’t wait. Take the leap!!!! Enrollyourself in a private pilot’s license trial class, and see if it clicks with you. Maybe you'll enjoy it and start experiencing life from a whole new angle.
